René Barbier, a fourth-generation winemaker, honed his craft at the esteemed Clos Mogador, guided by his father of the same name. Together, they dedicated over two decades to perfecting winemaking, emphasizing the significance of terroir in creating exceptional wines, as seen in iconic creations like Clos Mogador, Venus Universal, and Espectacle.
In 2001, René Barbier acquired the Els Bellvisos vineyard, partnering with Sara Pérez, daughter of Spanish winemaker José Luis Pérez, to champion sustainability and organic practices. The vineyard, meaning "Beautiful View," sits on steep slopes with slate-rich soil and remained untouched for four decades. Reviving it involved labor-intensive, organic methods, using mules and hand-plowing, natural fertilizers, and wild yeasts for a natural fermentation.
Sindicat La Figuera, a cooperative winery founded in 1932 in the Montsant Mountains, saw René Barbier and Sara Pérez taking over winemaking in 2020. Located in a remote hamlet at 600 meters, they continue the tradition of crafting pure Garnatxa wines from 25 hectares of vines, producing the Garnacha 2020 Sindicat La Figuera. This rustic red wine, aged in concrete tanks on fine lees, offers red fresh fruit, mineral aromas, and elegance, earning consistently high ratings, with the 2021 vintage achieving 91/100.
